As the 2015 6ADII State Champions, the Katy Tigers won their eighth state championship against a highly touted but ultimately flat Lake Travis team.

Katy Tops Lake Travis 34-7 to Claim Eighth State Championship

December 20, 2015 – Austin American-Statesman

By defeating Lake Travis on Saturday night, Katy moved into a tie atop the list of all-time state championships in UIL 11-man football.

On Saturday night at NRG Stadium, Lake Travis found its path to a sixth state championship blocked by a wall of red.

Katy’s defense lived up to the hype, and senior Kyle Porter rushed for 188 yards and three touchdowns as the Tigers defeated Lake Travis 34-7 for the Class 6A, Division II football championship. A state runner-up in each of the past two seasons, Katy (16-0) closed an undefeated season by winning the eighth state title in school history.

Lake Travis (15-1) was attempting to win its first championship in the University Interscholastic League’s largest classification. The Cavaliers won five straight championships in Class 4A from 2007-11.

Katy and Lake Travis combined for 24 points in the first half, but Katy built its 17-7 lead on the back of its defense. Katy forced three turnovers, and each one was converted into points.

The Tigers recovered a fumble and grabbed two interceptions. The second pick — coming against Lake Travis junior quarterback Charlie Brewer, who had been intercepted only three times in 348 passes — was returned 43 yards for a touchdown by sophomore defensive lineman Michael Matus.

Not to be overshadowed, Lake Travis intercepted two of Garrett Doiron’s first-half passes for Katy, and the Cavaliers also blocked a field-goal attempt. Austin Hiller’s interception with 1:19 to play in the second quarter led to a four-play drive that Brewer capped with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Cade Green.

Lake Travis and Katy continued to slug it out through a scoreless third quarter before the Tigers pulled away in the final quarter.

A 25-yard punt return midway through the fourth quarter set Katy up at the Lake Travis 22, and Porter, the game’s offensive MVP who has fielded scholarship offers from TCU, Oregon and Texas, reached the end zone on a 4-yard run with 7:15 to go. The Tigers added 10 more points over the next four minutes as Lake Travis fumbled away a kickoff and went three-and-out on an offensive drive.

Lake Travis was averaging 50.9 points per game this season through 15 contests, but Katy had allowed only 55 points all season. On Saturday, Lake Travis was limited to 207 yards of offense, and the Cavaliers were held to a single-digit point total for the first time since a 35-3 loss to Westwood in September of 2006.

Brewer led Lake Travis with 172 yards passing and his 42nd touchdown throw of the year. Despite surrendering a season high in points, Lake Travis’ defense allowed Katy to net only 262 yards.
