State Powerhouse Tigers

The Katy Tigers softball program has become a powerhouse in Texas high‑school softball. Under legendary coach Kalum Haack, the Tigers never missed the playoffs in 26 seasons and captured two UIL Class 6A state championships. The Katy Times reported that Haack’s program compiled over 850 wins, won countless district titles and reached at least the regional semifinals in 18 of his 26 seasons. In 2024 Haack announced that he was retiring following the Tigers’ Region III final loss to Kingwood; he remarked that he “loved every bit” of his career and felt fortunate to have coached great kids and assistants. Haack’s final nine seasons ended with outright district championships every year.

A new era

After Haack’s retirement, Meghan Burrell, a longtime assistant who had spent 12 years on the Tigers’ staff, was promoted to head coach. VYPE’s preseason rankings noted that 2025 marked “a new era” because Katy would be under a new head coach for the first time in 26 years. Burrell is not a stranger to the program; she has been part of every district and regional run over the last decade. The new leader inherits an experienced roster loaded with Division‑I commits and championship experience.

Key returning players for 2025

VYPE’s preseason feature on the Tigers highlighted the strength of Katy’s returning core. It mentioned several players who dominated the previous season and return as seniors or juniors:

• Ella Kate Smith – Oklahoma commit who hit .465 and posted a 1.16 ERA
• Lauryn Soken – LSU commit with a .313 batting average and 0.93 ERA
• Hailey Gore – University of Houston commit who batted .509
• Montgomery Henderson – Oklahoma State commit who hit .486
• Maddie Smith – NC State commit (.391 average, first‑team All‑District)
• Brooke Fechner – McLennan College commit (.473 average, first‑team All‑District)
• Avery Porter – Missouri commit and first‑team All‑District infielder
• Lexie Waugh – UT‑Arlington commit (utility player)
• Paige Stall – Cisco College commit

MaxPreps’ 2024–25 roster also listed Bell Jaramillo, Caylee Gaytan, Nevaeh Phillips, Kassidy Minnick, Evie Willemssen, Libby Hroch, Abby Eldridge and Lana Davis. Many of these players return for the 2025 season, giving Burrell a deep roster.

2024–25 season recap

Katy entered the 2025 season ranked near the top of every poll. Sports Illustrated’s high‑school rankings placed the Tigers No. 2 in the nation in late March with a 23‑1 record and noted that they had allowed just 17 runs all season. The Tigers rolled through District 19‑6A, finishing 16‑0 and outscoring opponents by lopsided margins. A Katy Times recap of the season noted that Katy finished 34‑1 overall (36‑2 including playoff games), dominated the district and was recognized as one of the top‑ranked teams in Texas and nationally.

The Tigers swept Alief Elsik in the bi‑district round (15‑0 and 15‑0) and then shut out Cy Fair 11‑0 and 9‑0 to claim the area championship. The Katy Times reported that Katy beat Cy Fair 9‑0 at home to become the area champs. In the one‑game regional semifinal against Clear Springs, Katy built an early 2‑0 lead and later led 5‑4 in the seventh inning, but Clear Springs’ Eryn Polite hit a walk‑off three‑run homer to upset the Tigers 7‑5. The loss ended a 19‑game winning streak and prevented the team from reaching the regional final.

2024-2025 Area Champs

Despite the heartbreaking ending, Katy’s 2024–25 campaign reaffirmed the program’s elite status. Lauryn Soken and Ella Kate Smith dominated in the circle, while the lineup’s depth produced runs at will. With most starters returning and Coach Burrell now at the helm, expectations remain high.

A Tradition of Excellence

The 2015 season marked a turning point for Katy Softball, as a young but fearless team battled through one of the toughest playoff roads in program history to capture the school’s first UIL Class 6A state title. Powered by gritty pitching, clutch late-inning heroics and a never-quit mentality, the Tigers outlasted The Woodlands in an extra-inning semifinal and then walked off Lewisville 3-2 in the championship game. It was dramatic, emotional, and the beginning of Katy’s rise as a perennial state power.

Four years later, Katy returned to the big stage with championship expectations – and delivered in dominant fashion. The 2019 Tigers stormed through the postseason and capped off a historic 37-2 season with an emphatic 8-2 win over Klein Collins in the Class 6A state final. With explosive offense, lockdown pitching, and a veteran roster playing with complete confidence, Katy left no doubt that they belonged at the top of Texas softball. Their performance remains one of the most commanding championship runs in program history.
