2015 Softball Championship

Katy’s 2015 softball championship delivered one of the most dramatic title runs in school history, battling through extra-inning thrillers and a walk-off win in the state final to claim the program’s first championship.

New Champions in Town

In 2015 the Katy High School softball team authored one of the program’s most memorable playoff runs, earning the Tigers their first state championship. Coach Kalum Haack guided a young roster (15 of the 17 players were underclassmen) that finished the regular season 34‑6. Sophomore pitcher/infielder Kourtney Coveney posted a .491 batting average and a 28‑3 pitching record, and she was joined in the lineup by freshman third‑baseman Kayla Garcia (.495), junior center‑fielder Katie Clark (.438) and sophomore outfielder McKay Bloxham (.457). Their success earned Katy just its second trip to the UIL state tournament and its first since 2007.

The Region III Guantlet

The Tigers’ playoff road was anything but easy. After routing Houston Reagan 16‑0 in the bi‑district round and sweeping Cypress Woods by scores of 10‑0 and 15‑8, Katy battled past Cy‑Fair 13‑12, 5‑6 and 13‑4 in a high‑scoring regional quarterfinal. In the regional semifinal against Alvin, the Tigers dropped the opening game 1‑3 before winning the next two 9‑1 and 8‑2.

The regional final versus Clute Brazoswood also went the distance; Katy won Game 1 2‑1, lost Game 2 3‑7 and sealed the series with a decisive 12‑5 victory. The local student paper covering Lewisville’s team noted that Coveney “hit a game‑winning eighth‑inning home run” against Brazoswood and delivered two RBI singles, including the game‑winner against The Woodlands. Her clutch hitting helped Katy survive these best‑of‑three battles and reach the state tournament.

Extra‑inning thriller in the semifinal

Katy met perennial power The Woodlands in the Class 6A state semifinal at the University of Texas’ McCombs Field. The Lady Tigers scored first when junior Ashley Nassy reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second and came home on an errant throw. The Woodlands tied the game on an Aubrey Leach RBI single, then took a 2‑1 lead on a controversial interference call against third‑baseman Kayla Garcia.

Undeterred, Katy rallied in the bottom of the sixth: Clark reached on a throwing error, freshman Bailee Shashack sacrificed her to second and Coveney singled to plate the tying run. In extra innings Clark singled again, and after two outs, Coveney grounded a single past the second baseman to drive in Clark and give Katy a 3‑2 walk‑off victory. Coveney pitched a complete game and went 2‑for‑4 at the plate.

In the championship game against Lewisville, the Tigers again showcased their flair for late‑game drama. The state final was decided in the bottom of the seventh inning when McKay Bloxham hit an RBI single that scored Nicole Valdez and delivered a 3‑2 walk‑off victory. ABC13 described Bloxham’s hit as a “bases‑loaded squeeze bunt” and quoted her as saying she was nervous but ready to deliver. The win marked Katy’s first softball state championship and capped a postseason filled with one‑run games and comeback victories. As ABC13 noted, the Tigers “seemed to have a flair for the dramatic” throughout their title run.

Post‑tournament honors and legacy

The Texas Girls Coaches Association recognized five Katy players on the 2015 Class 6A all‑tournament team: pitcher Kylie Redding, first‑baseman Kourtney Coveney, freshman third‑baseman Kayla Garcia, junior outfielder Katie Clark and sophomore outfielder McKay Bloxham.

The UIL roster also shows that Katy’s lineup was dominated by underclassmen, suggesting that the state title was not only a breakthrough but also a foundation for future success. The 2015 championship run is still celebrated in the Katy community for its resilience, dramatic finishes and the clutch performances of young players who etched their names into Tigers history.
